Application

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to safely manage a variety of specialised finishing processes in the context of independent creative practice.

It applies to individuals such as ceramicists, glass artists, sculptors, jewellers and others who use aesthetic and technical finishing options with hard materials in their practices.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the impact of historical, contemporary and emerging trends in specialised finishing

describe properties of, and specifications for, different specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories

identify typical problems that occur in the specialised finishing process and how they may be resolved

explain how characteristics of different materials achieve different effects when finishing techniques are applied

list cost and supply parameters for specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories in the context of professional practice

identify sustainability issues associated with the materials, tools, equipment and accessories used in specialised finishing

outline intellectual property issues and legislation associated with the use of research or adapted concepts in creative work

discuss organisational and legislative work health and safety procedures required for specialised finishing activities.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

relevant information about finishing processes, materials and equipment

a safe work space for specialised finishing processes.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
